Welcome pack and markets
A welcome pack of essentials for
your first day can be ordered to await your arrival and is recommended
if you are arriving late or over the weekend. In France, most
supermarkets close at 7 pm on Saturdays and most are closed on Sundays
although a few do now open on Sunday mornings. We are happy to supply an
order form for you to indicate your needs. (Welcome packs are charged
purely at cost, with no mark-up).
However, if you prefer to explore
early on Sunday morning, the local markets in Jarnac and Angouleme are
open until 1 pm and are great for fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese and
bread ….. as well as wines, truffles and other local specialities.
There are two bakers in the
nearby village of Hiersac for bread, croissants and pain au chocolate.
The baker’s van also visits our hamlet each morning (except Sunday)
around 10.30 am and you can order your daily bread and croissants in
advance.
Cerise, our neighbour’s friendly
donkey lives just round the corner and really appreciates any bread left
over. We will be happy to introduce you to her.

A little
history
Built of local stone, with
walls up to one metre thick, the core section of the house is at least
400 years old, while the newer parts were built at various times, mainly
during the lifetime of Napoleon. The central house is said to have been
a garrison on the approaches to Angouleme, possibly going back 600
years, originally including a small tower, which was demolished 200
years ago and rebuilt as additional rooms. Consequently some of the
windows in the cellar and roof areas are shaped and angled as
embrasures, commanding approaches. |
